- It's an image type, with transparancy, but can't scale without pixelization. **(So don't allow it to scale.. like with width:auto; css commands).

Advantages

debatable tip: For possible brownie points with google... in terms of Search Engine Optimization (SEO): SMALL = GOOD in terms of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as well... the less data that sends the more favorable your site would be to a mobile user looking for something with a lot of "bounce" traffic. Meaning clicking a lot of links in google and hitting back after loading the site for a moment or two.
